Opening Doors, Opening Festivals...

Today, I'm busy writing a Cinedulce proposal for a big meeting tomorrow AM with HBO. We are approaching them with a unique partnership idea that would be awesome for both parties (we humbly believe), but obviously depends on their short- and long-term growth strategies. Hopefully, we're consistent with those plans. At the very least, this meeting will open the door to future discussions about deepening the partnership between the two companies.

On the flip side, I saw two great '09 NYILFF movies this weekend, including the one Calixto and I think is our opener! Holy guacamole... did you read that? We may have our OPENING NIGHT MOVIE! It's a very different kind of film for us to show on Opening Night, but we both feel strongly about trying our best to challenge stereotypes and showcase the diversity, complexity and, of course, quality of the stories coming out of this community.

Busy, Busy

Phew - what a busy week! I just got to my office after two long meetings. Plus, Calixto and I had two long meetings yesterday that also took up our entire AM and early PM. I repeat, phew! Good news: the NYILFF web site is going to be hotter than ever. We're adding some cool, new functionality that I think you're going to dig. We've also started to plan the festival's operations, so that's good, too. It feels excellent to get the ball rolling on this stuff.

On the Cinedulce tip, it seems we have a good shot of bringing in a major media partner, which is precisely what we need. Andrew (Remezcla) and I are putting together a really fun program, but a solid media partner is key to drive the kind of eyeballs we need to justify sponsor ROI. As soon as I have more info, I'll let you know. Suffice it to say, I'm psyched!

Awesome Agency Job Opportunity!

My good friend, Brian, @ Octagon (VERY hot agency!) is looking for a Miami-based account executive to handle sports-related sponsorship management and planning for a huge client in the Caribbean and Latin America. To clarify, this is not sponsorship sales; this is strategy and activation coordination on the agency side. Amazing.

2009 MARKS 10 YEARS OF SHOWCASING THE BEST LATINO FILMS FROM U.S AND ABROAD

Celebration Includes Consumer Video Promotion “SHARE UR STORY”
****
Programming Expands to Reflect the Broader Multicultural, Urban Experience

Celebrating its 10th year, the New York International Latino Film Festival (NYILFF) officially announced that the festival will be held from July 28, 2009 to August 2, 2009 in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City, NY. The NYILFF also announced a new programming category, Cinedulce Showcase, that will feature Urban, non-Latino specific films; and a call for entry for “SHARE UR STORY”, a consumer promotion hosted on Cinedulce.com. “SHARE UR STORY” offers the NYLFF community a chance to tell their favorite fest story through an original vlog, which may then be included in the official 2009 NYILFF advertising campaign. HBO returns as the fest’s presenting sponsor.

Featuring diverse programming from the U.S. and around the world, the NYILFF, once again, sets the stage for some of the most highly anticipated Latino and Urban programming of the year. This year, the festival returns with a full line-up of films, parties, panels and much more. Among them is a new programming category, Cinedulce Showcase, created to present stories beyond the Latino experience. As a continuation of the festival’s commitment to support rising talent and feature diverse films that push boundaries and tell stories that reflect today’s multi-ethnic landscape, Cinedulce Showcase offers an opportunity for filmmakers to present Urban, non-Latino specific stories at the NYILFF.

In partnership with Cinedulce, the NYILFF is asking filmmakers, film talent, attendees, volunteers, staff and partners of the festival to share their favorite memories from years past by uploading an original video submission for the “SHARE UR STORY” promotion on Cinedulce.com. Participants can post vlogs on everything from premiering a movie for the first time to finding love at the festival. All entries will be featured on Cinedulce.com starting in April, and selected stories will be featured in NYILFF's 10th anniversary advertising campaign, allowing the community to literally watch itself on-screen at the festival. Submissions are now being accepted.

THE FOLLOWING RULES FOR“SHARE UR STORY” ENTRIES APPLY:

  • 10-Minute maximum running time per submission.
  • Deadline for consideration in the NYILFF advertising campaign: March 31

What up Brooklyn??

Okay, so my 10:30am meeting with my friend, Andrew, at Remezcla in Williamsburg lasted for several hours. I finally got back to the office at around 2:30 and now have to turn right back around for a 2nd, unplanned meeting with him and a potential major media partner for a program we (Cinedulce & Remezcla) are co-developing. I'm psyched to have the meeting, but this back-and-forth to Brooklyn is a bit nutter butter.

Moreover, this new PM meeting back in BK forced me to postpone a 4:30pm conference call to start discussing Cinedulce 3.0. Yep, that's right -- Cinedulce 3.0 is now under way. Woo-hoo! It's going to take a while to plan out, so don't get too excited... yet. ;)

Budgeting... Yay!

Don't you just love putting together a budget when you haven't yet finished fundraising, i.e., you don't really know how much money you have to budget? Very interesting process, let me tell you. It goes something like this: Calixto, "Liz, I think we should add XYZ to the budget. Thoughts?" My reply, "Um, you mean add it to the working, imaginary budget? Sure! Sounds great!"

In 1 hour, this is roughly the conversation we're going to have about the '09 NY Latino Film Festival. Sort of. Truth is, we're planning to scrutinize the budget, line-by-line, to see: 1. where we can shave; and, 2. if there are any monies we can re-prioritize so they're more efficiently &/or effectively spent. Literally, how can we get more bang for our buck? We've already cut a fair bit of fat from last year (thank God because that budget ballooned!), but we both think there is more work to be done. Like any business, we need to consider how we can continue to increase revenue but also decrease or, at least cap, expenses. Budgeting...Yay!

Hindsight is 20/20

Last night, I saw my old friend, Ryan Star, kill it at Bowery Ballroom. After the show, I caught up with one of his former band mates, Peter. Peter's now running his own software development co. in NYC. I asked Peter if seeing Ryan continue to pursue the dream of rockstardom made him nostalgic or regret his own career path. He basically said, hell no. The band was awesome, but now he has no desire to be on a tour bus, living the life of a nomad.

We bonded over how hindsight is 20/20. Both of us have had what appear to be circuitous and, at times, challenging professional journeys. Of course, we made our own choices, but that doesn't mean it's been easy or we haven't made real sacrifices. In retrospect, though, it all makes sense and has led us to where we are now, which is an exciting and hopeful (but still not guaranteed) place.

The moral of the story is:
Stick to your guns, because, even if everything doesn't make sense now, in due time, you will realize you are writing the story of your life; like all compelling stories, the narrative will take unexpected twists and turns, but concrete themes and a clarified direction will start to emerge. The next chapter is just a page-turn away.

Some Advice From Me to You

I just returned from catching up with my good friend and the NYILFF's former publicist, Gabrielle, who recently changed careers; she's now a life coach, motivational speaker and author... all before age 30! I was telling her how I felt this pulsing positive energy for the festival and Cinedulce, and she said she could sense it. Apparently, I look lighter, happier, calmer. We are both very yogic (and as she says, 'metaphysical') about life. Below are a few of our shared philosophies:

1. Set your intentions. i.e., What really do you want in life? What mark do you want to leave?

2. Figure out who you are and what makes you happy. As my dad always says, you should always look forward to both Friday PM and Monday AM. If you dread Monday, rethink your career.

3. Contribute to the community in some way. That is, do something that offers some larger benefit other than making money. I can't tell you how many times I've heard
the passion Calixto and I have is infectious. The thing is, yes, we're trying to build businesses and make money. But, money doesn't inspire us. What does inspire us is the concept of nurturing filmmakers, art and storytelling, encouraging appreciation and love for all cultures and bringing together a diverse community. Money doesn't inspire anyone. Motivate? Yes. Inspire? Never.

4. Stay focused on the present, with an eye towards the future. Appreciate what you have now, here, today vs. dwelling on what you want tomorrow, next year, whenever. Today's hard work, persistence and commitment lead to tomorrow's success.

5. Send out positive vibrations. Energy-wise, you receive what you send out to the world. Positivity breed positivity.

6. Believe in yourself. Value yourself. If you can't sell the story of you to yourself, who else is gonna buy it?

Marinate on that and have a super weekend. Buenas noches!

Do You Feel It?

I'm almost nervous to write this, but I have a crazy good feeling about this year - for both the NY Int'l Latino Film Festival and Cinedulce. An almost palpable, positive energy has emerged and it seems to be building... slowly, steadily. My buzzing gut tells me this may, indeed, be an interesting year for us. Unfortunately, I can't YET get into details about our goings on and recent developments, but I can say the following: people seem to get it. It's that simple. Corporate America. Distributors. Hollywood. Filmmakers. Film fans. Everyone. Everyone seems to understand what we're trying to do and, I think (I hope!) they're diggin' it.

As the NYILFF celebrates its 10th anniversary in July, Calixto and I sense an almost sudden shift in perception of us, of the event, of the power of this community we try so hard to reflect and support. And, of course, in corporate terms, Cinedulce is really still in its infancy... but, baby steps lead to walking and then running. All I care about at this point is people get it.

I feel it. Do you?

Networking in the AM

Yesterday AM, I went to the Horowitz Associates 9th Annual Multicultural Media Forum. I was super fortunate to have my good friend at Wing Latino (big Hispanic agency) invite me as his guest - he was a panelist. For the record, he was great. Anyway, I don't usually love these kinds of events but, the truth is, they often serve as very good networking opportunities. It's crucial in biz to keep meeting new folks, and meet folks I did!

First off, I finally met in person the diversity contact at Yum! Brands (Taco Bell, KFC, Pizza Hut, etc.) with whom I've been speaking for literally years but have never met. Abrazo grande! I also met the head of entertainment and integrated marketing at a big multicultural agency, an executive from Cablevision and another at a major cable network. I also ran into the folks at the agency that represents one of the key brands we're pitching for the NYILFF. It looks like their client is coming on board as a lower level partner. Great news!

All in all, not a bad AM..not bad at all.

Who Doesn't Love Free Stuff??

Check out the photog's socks! LOL!

I had the most bizarre yet fun experience on Saturday afternoon. A good friend of mine and my stylist for the
NY Latino Film Festival, Oscar Montes de Oca, connected me to this amazing massage therapist, Robert Smalls, who is having a piece written about him in a leading NYC newspaper. Because the editorial focus is on at-home services, they needed someone to volunteer as a client so they can get shots of Robert doing his thing in a home environment. Not one to turn down a free massage, I eagerly accepted and before you know it, the photog, Robert and I are all chatting away in my apartment while I'm getting a complimentary massage. Completely surreal. Totally fun. That said, Robert's awesome and I highly recommend him! If you're interested, let me know and I'll pass along his contact info. FYI: he also works at NYC's Exhale.

On another note, I had a very encouraging call this AM with one of the lead agencies for a major wireless co. regarding a potential content partnership with Cinedulce. We've been talking with them for a while now, and this call makes me feel hopeful about the possibility of something actually happening. Insanity! Fingers crossed...!!!
